Grease two 8 inch round cake tins.

Put the margarine, sugar and syrup in a small saucepan and melt together over a gentle heat. or microwave for 1 minute. Mix the flour and cocoa together and add the melted mixture. Add the egg and beat well. Dissovle the Bicarbonate of soda in the milk and then add to the mixture. Divide between the tins and bake at 180C (350F) for 15-20 minutes until firm to the touch. Turn onto a cooking rack and leave to cool.

Cream the margarine and gradually add the icing sugar, cocoa powder and milk. Add more milk if necessary. Sandwich the two cakes together with half the icing and spread the rest over the top. Decorate with chocolate flakes.

    75g 2 1/2oz Cocoa Powder (sifted)
    1 Egg
    1 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
    100ml 1/4pt Milk
   
    the icing
    125g 4oz Margarine
    250g 8oz Icing Sugar
    3 tbs Cocoa Powder
    1 tbs Milk
